In the spring of 2000 the English Department of Göteborg (Gothenburg) University celebrated the 25th anniversary of the start of the Gothenburg programme at the University of Sussex Since 1975 Swedish students can do full-time undergraduate courses in English language and literature on the A, B, C, and D-levels according to the Swedish model.

Levels correspond to one semester’s full time study ('en termins heltidsstudier') and is awarded 20 credits ('poäng'), which can be included in a primary (Bachelor’s) degree of 120 credits (three years’ full-time studies) or a secondary (Master’s) degree (160 credits), or as part of a study programme leading to a teacher training degree.

Each 20-credit course is transferable between any university or university college in Sweden. Normal rules for Swedish student loans apply. There are no course or tuition fees.

The university semesters are approximately 20 weeks long and last (officially) from 1 September to 19 January (Autumn semester) and 20 January to 6 June (Spring semester).

The Autumn 2001 courses start on 3 September and finish on or near 15 December. The Spring 2002 courses start on 21 January for the A-, B- and C-courses and finish on or near 7 June.

The D-courses follow the University of Sussex terms and start around 10 January 2002 and finish on or near 7 June. The following courses are available for the academic year 2001/2002:

Most students on the Gothenburg programme at Sussex tend to be teacher trainees or students majoring in English and other modern languages, but many have opted to do English as a separate course or as part of a degree programme in the Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Economics or Business Studies.

The programme is also open to international students. It should be noted, however, that the A-level course is to some extent comparative in its design and some of the textbooks and other course material are in Swedish.
